In a stirring come from in front victory, Jeff Leonard built a healthy 15 point lead through the first three rounds and then held off a hard charging duo of Fitch and Jones to clinch the victory with a 7 point margin. Jeff's victory was set up by a sterling 73 shot for his second 18 during the Saturday round which tallied a 40 point score. This created what would be an insurmountable lead. In a stirring duel for 2nd place, it came down to the final putt on the 18th hole for Steve Fitch to hold off Steve Jones' strong charge. Frankie in the meantime was putting on a exhibition of how to hit a 4 wood for his two schlub playing partners in the other threesome, while treating them to several Fireballs.
Making a valiant effort to avoid relinquishing the coveted Poor Boy trophy, Fitchy could not muster enough double points to catch Champion Leonard. In an interview with Brandel Chamblee of the Golf Channel, during a break-in in the PGA coverage Fitch stated, "I was getting a bit sick of looking at that trophy for the last 5 years and wondering when one of these losers would take it away....now we know" The Poor Boys thank Fitchy for being a gracious champion for the last 5 years, and especially appreciate and look forward to his and Brenda's annual tee gift bag. This year's thoughtful and unique golf towels are modeled on the landing page of this website.
Overcoming concerns that he might be needed at home at any time, and limited practice rounds, Jonesy made a strong last day challenge to Fitchy and just needed that last putt to drop, or one more hole to take second. As always Steve was a gracious host to the Poor Boys at Plum Brook, at Luanne's Cottage, and at CIC.
