Poor boy 2025

Wecome to the 22nd Poor Boy Invitational

The Poor Boys are prepped and ready to once again compete for the coveted Poor Boy Cup, currently in the possession of Captain Jones.

Steve Jones

Steve Jones

Steve Jones

Founder and Chairman of the Poor Boy Executive Committee, as well as host of the Poor Boys at Plum Brook, Steve has organized another stellar event for 2025.  As current reigning champion, Steve's preparation for his defense of the crown has consisted largely of drinking Champagne from the Poor Boy Cup.

Frank Ray

One of the highlights of Frank's Poor Boy off season was captaining his prestigious Thorfin Cup team to victory over 144 holes in Pinehurst.  In spite of his heavy mediation schedule Frank managed his annual spring training trip to the Phoenix area while also posting an impressive amount of rounds at The Golf Club.

Steve Fitch

Steve Fitch

After an uncharacteristic 7th place for the day and 5th overall at Eagle Creek in 2024, Fitchy dedicated himself to a Rocky like physical regimen to prepare for regaining his title.  Shown here on his bicycle in Palm Springs on his way home from the Tom Weiskopf Lock Jaw Seminar and Clinic.  Fitchy excelled on Frank's Thorfin team, winning 6 out of 7 matches, making his chances of a repeat invitation unlikely.

Ron Kopp

Steve Fitch

One of the original Poor Boys with his participation going back to 2004, Ron spent a good part of this offseason haunting fishing holes in the west and midwest.  Ron enjoys driving his new Jaguar, because, to paraphrase Stuart Smalley, "He's smart enough, he's rich enough, and doggone it he deserves it!"

Jeff Leonard

Shoulder issues made Jeff's participation in this year's Poor Boy touch and go for a while, but thanks to a timely cortisone shot, Jeff will being teeing it up with the boys come May 30th at Elyria.  After a scheduling faux paux in Palm Springs, Jeff is now rocking a paper calendar, when he remembers where he left it.  As has been the case the past few years, the Poor Boys greatly appreciate Jeff securing the lake house and performing his usual excellent chef duties on Saturday  evening.

Tim Van Eman

Last seen dropping this beauty at the La Quinta bag drop as Fitchy pulled up, Tim  has spent a productive off season working on his trash talking game.  Coming close the past few years appears to have given Tim a chronic case of TDS (Trophy Deficiency Syndrome).  Tim's threat to bring some Boone's Farm to the Friday cook out has the other Poor Boys thinking "intervention."

Denny Ramey

Ralph Grajzl

Ralph Grajzl

Denny is back for his third attempt at Poor Boy Fame.  He has been rapidly climbing the Poor Boy learning curve after participating in the Pinehurst Faux Boy last fall.  After posting 3 scores over 100 last fall, Denny appeared to be headed for Poor Boy fame, but recently has reverted back to form shooting in the 80's, bringing his index closer to reality.

Ralph Grajzl

Ralph Grajzl

Ralph Grajzl

As the master gardener among the Poor Boys, Ralph  has had to content himself with  growing his trophies the last few years. He's looking to change that this year and engrave his own name on the coveted Poor Boy cup, after filling it with some fine Slovenian wine.

Not Playing this Year

Gary Cross was a late scratch this year due to his apprehension by the Geauga County Sheriff's department outside a meth lab in Eastern Geauga County.  Facing deportation  to his native Scioto County, Cross is charged with 4th Degree Handicap Maintenance, and a federal charge of Consipiracy to Possess Money.

2025 Courses

Day One - Elyria Country Club

Similar to Fairlawn, Elyria Country Club presents a classic test of Midwestern golf.  With 6 sets of tees it provides the Poor Boys with options for every game.

Day Two - Plumbrook

It wouldn't be a Poor Boy without a round at Plum Brook, also the summer home of Captain Jones.  Designed by Tom Bendelow, the "Johnny Appleseed of Golf Course Design" Plum Brook provides a strong test of shot accuracy and recovery from juicy rough at this time of year.

Day Three - Eagle Creek

Day Three - Eagle Creek

Eagle Creek Golf Club located in Norwalk, Ohio returns to the Poor Boy rota of courses again this year after providing a thrilling finish in 2022 and 2023.  Designed by Brian Huntley, this par 71 course received 4 1/2 stars out of 5 from Golf Digest.

Day One Results from Elyria

Frankie jumped out to a narrow lead over a focused Fitchy as the dust cleared in Elyria.  Well within striking distance is the trio of The Reigning, Denny, and Ron.  Jeff was a late scratch due to a family obligation, but joined the company of Poor Boys for the rest of the week-end.

Something for the poor Boys

Steve and Brenda do it again!

Every year Brenda, with consultation from Steve, spends a considerable amount of thought as to what should be this year's unique party favor for the Poor Boys.  This year, while watching a Marie Antionette biopic, it came to her, "Let them eat cake!"

Fitch presenting the cake

Day Two Results from Plum Brook

Day Two dawned cold and wet, which meant the Plum Brook rough would be particularly punishing.  The end result was a tighter field with only five points difference between top to bottom.  It should make for an exciting Sunday at Eagle Creek.

Aaaand we have a new champion!

2025 Poor Boy Champion Tim Van Eman

Showing he had a golf game to match his trash talking game, our new Reigning Champion will be quaffing his favorite beverage from the Poor Boy Cup for the next year.

Protest Denied

A last minute protest regarding Tim's potentially wearing USGA non compliant shoes was resolved in Tim's favor when the rules committee ruled it was a fashion foul, but not a golf foul.

Day Three and final results

The final day left several of the Poor Boys thinking of just one or two missed short putts.  With 4 points separating the top 4 finishers the event came down to a lipped out putt on 18 by Ron that let Tim hang on for the win.
