Since its founding in 2006, the Poor Boy has traditionally been a 54 hole affair, unless weather intervened, which it often did in early May. This year's event was moved to late May with hopes of better weather. Unfortunately, the fates threw a pandemic at the Poor Boys. Consequently, the 2020 edition of the Poor Boy will be shortened to 36 socially distant holes played at Plum Brook on Saturday and Sunday, May 30th and 31st. This year will feature a team event, and will be kicked off with a Zoom video conference (shown above) the team Captains, Jeff and Fitchy picked their teams after some impassioned pleas by the other participants as to why they should be picked first.
Founder, CEO, and Chairman of the Rules and Accommodations committees of the Poor Boy. Steve, shown here with his Pandemic Pup Sophie has been weathering the shelter at home era going shopping early in the morning, enjoying an occasional Zoom cocktail hour (with Kopp) and even getting in a few billable hours
One of the founding members and the peripatetic golfer of the crew, Frankie, the 2011 Poor Boy champion, plays out of The Golf Club. Shown here enjoying a libation on the sky deck of the Frank A Ray Co., LPA world headquarters. Frankie will be a one day participant in this year's Poor Boy, where he will be granted one day Scioto County origins to play on Fitchy's Scioto County Dull Stars team.
Shown here washing the dishes after preparing another quarantine breakfast, Steve has spent the spring, after returning from Palm Springs, watching it rain and slipping out for an occasional round walking Brookside. Steve and Brenda were looking forward to attending the beautiful and talented Cora Fitch's high school graduation but will have to hold the celebration for less infectious times.
The reigning Poor Boy Champion, Jeff, seen above accepting the coveted Poor Boy trophy from the previous Champion, captains the Roetzel/Van Eman team in this years event. Jeff is graciously hosting several of the Poor Boys at a friends house on Lake Erie this year
Tim, a law school classmate of Steve Jones, is searching for the elusive key to moving up in the Poor Boy this year. Tim plays out of Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in lovely Powell, Ohio.
Cross has been spending the pandemic FaceTiming kids and grandkids, walking dogs, ordering take-out, and lining up for senior hours at Costco. Pretty much like everysone else. Oh, and growing a beard that started out looking like Hemingway, is on its way to Gabby Hayes, and he's hoping for a virtual Santa gig on Amazon by November.
One of the original Poor Boys, and a partner of Steve Jones, (and Jeff twice) Ron has found time in his busy schedule to play in this year's Poor Boy. Ron has been taking lessons and making sizable investments in golf equipment in quest of wresting the coveted Poor Boy imitation plastic trophy from Jeff's hands.
Todd returns to the Poor Boy after a couple of years of perfecting his game. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to play much recently, so is bearing an index from more frequent golfing times. Todd recently joined the Roetzel firm making the Poor Boy one partner shy of being a company outing with guests. Could be a dark horse this year, having little time to develop bad golfing habits during the pandemic. Picked to be part of Fitchy's All Scioto County+Frankie Team.
Designed in 1919 by Tom Bendelow, the "Johnny Appleseed of Golf Course Design." Both rounds of this year's Poor Boy will be played at Plum Brook. The Blue tees provide a 6127 yard, par 71 course rated at 69.2 and a challenging 131 slope rating. This year only one of Poor Boys is enduring the stigma of moving up to the White Tees, hoping to avoid his annual Plum Brook humiliation.
In a match that came down to the last few holes, Steve Fitch won his 9th Poor Boy championship. Steve edged out reigning champion Jeff Leonard by 4 points after they went into the last day tied. Todd Book slipped to 3rd on Sunday after a strong start on Saturday. The Scioto County Dull Stars swept the team game.
