Hello friends and welcome to Poor Boy XXI. 2024, once again finds the company of Poor Boys, except for Fitchy, hoping to avoid another Washington Generals like performance while Fitchy does his Meadowlark Lemon imitation.
Founder and Chairman of the Poor Boy Executive Committee, Steve has organized another event for 2024. Steve is seen above showing off Jeff's culinary creation "Birthday Cake Melange." Steve has been enjoying preparing for this year's Poor Boy with all his rounds being in his seventies.
In between shooting his age at various courses around Columbus, Frank has developed an interest in Spanish professional football where his grandson is a rising star. Frank spent the Poor Boy off season honing his game on some of the finest courses in the West, the South, and Scotland.
Fresh off of attending Granddaughter Cora's summa cum laude graduation from OU, Steve has been preparing to defend his Poor Boy title by making a Van Eman voodoo doll. As usual Steve spent the winter in Palm Springs where he regularly blessed the Poor Boys with pictures of beautiful desert vistas.
One of the original Poor Boys with his participation going back to 2004, Ron holds a grip on winning the annual trivia quiz that matches Fitchy's grip on the golf. Ron was recently honored by Leadership Akron, with the Lieberth Community Vision Award, reflecting his many years of service to the Akron community.
Jeff is the only Poor Boy to break Fitchy's stranglehold on the Poor Boy trophy in the last 12 years, so the Poor Boys who inhabit the back of the pack are pulling for Jeffy. The Poor Boys are united in their gratitude to Jeff for being the official hotelier and chef by providing the post golf cook out and lodging for the crew on the beautiful shores of Lake Erie.
It was touch and go for a while, but Tim was able to clear his calendar for another shot at Fitchy. This time he will not forget his lucky Muirfield hat.(The headaches from the hat Fitchy loaned him last year cleared up in February).
Denny joined the Poor Boys last year and remarkably, he's coming back this year. The picture of Denny's star on the Portsmouth flood wall attests to Denny's fame in his birthplace. (Although it is on the river facing side of the wall, so the fame could be eroded by the next flood.
Ralph is back for his fourth attempt at Poor Boy fame. Ralph is one of three Fairlawn members to grace this year's field of competitors. Ralph is proud of his Slovenian heritage, a European country and culture that has not only provided us with the lovely Melania Trump, but also Luka Doncic who has a lovely jump shot, and Mickey Dolenz who sang a lovely Monkees' song.
Cross returns to the Poor Boy after taking off 2023, for various surgeries to correct for 7 decades of poor posture and a bad attitude. He has been preparing for this years Poor Boy by watching Caddyshack and studying the book, Lining up That Critical Fourth Putt, with its companion volume: Marking Your Way to a Gimme.
Similar to Fairlawn, Elyria Country Club presents a classic test of Midwestern golf. With 6 sets of tees it provides the Poor Boys with options for every game.
It wouldn't be a Poor Boy without a round at Plum Brook, also the summer home of Captain Jones. Designed by Tom Bendelow, the "Johnny Appleseed of Golf Course Design" Plum Brook provides a strong test of shot accuracy and recovery from juicy rough at this time of year.
Eagle Creek Golf Club located in Norwalk, Ohio returns to the Poor Boy rota of courses again this year after providing a thrilling finish in 2022 and 2023. Designed by Brian Huntley, this par 71 course received 4 1/2 stars out of 5 from Golf Digest.
Capitan Jones put on a stellar performance while the rest of the Poor Boys, except Frankie, enjoyed the fine weather, the golf, not so much. Ramey, Fitch, Cross, and Grajzl are grinding to figure out how to catch the top two, while Ron and Jeff are thinking about the dinner menu.
For this year's gift to the Poor Boys, Steve and Brenda found the talented Jason Patrick Meyers of Cleveland Heights who came to Chateau Poor Boy to serenade the Poor Boys with some Kenny Chesney and other boomer classics.
While Chef Jeff and his able assistant, Ralph, grilled huuuge pork chops, the Poor Boys enjoyed salty snacks and adult beverages while being entertained by Jason.
Round 2 found the Poor Boys shaking off the effects of Jeff's Brontosaurus chops and a few adult beverages after round 1. Starting on the back 9 of Plum Brook, Tim Van Eman set a blazing pace that was enough to shoot him to the top of the leaderboard from 6th place on Day 1. The rough at Plum Brook took its toll on the Poor Boys with all the points, except Tim's, being in the 20's.
After a sumptious dinner at The Club, some of the Poor Boys headed back to Chateau Poor Boy where the were entertained by about 15 minutes of Fitchy re-enacting the above Far Side cartoon by trying to slide a door that opened out.
On a day that started in the rain, Captain Jones shot a 77 that allowed him to overcome a 2 point deficit, clinching first place and wresting the trophy from Fitchy's grip. Tim reluctantly agreed to accept the title of "Two Time Consecutive Reigning Runner-Up," preferring it to "First Loser."
The Poor Boys are unanimous in their gratitude to Captain Jones for organizing this year's event and hosting Round Two and lunch at Plum Brook. They are also appreciative of the generosity of Jeff for providing the house and dinner on Day One. And finally kudos go to Steve and Brenda for providing an unforgettable experience on Friday evening.
